Sloan, John. ROBERT HENRI, PAINTER. Etching, 1931, (Morse 246), 8th state, edition of 100, of which only 60 were printed; signed, titled and inscribed "100 proofs." 14" x 11". In Very Good condition, framed. Robert Henri, 1865-1929 was an American Painter and an influential educator on the subject of art. Sloan was one of his students, and the two were close friends. Henri was the founding spirit behind the "Ashcan School" of painting, teaching that artists should seek inspiration in realistic, everyday subjects. The portrait etching which Sloan did was done from memory, after Henri's death, as an homage. Sloan also did another etching, in 1906, titled "Memory," which pictures Henri, Henri's wife Linda, wh ohad died the previous year, Sloan's wife Dolly, and Sloan himself, together around a table.
