LONG ISLAND CITY

Marsh, Reginald. LONG ISLAND CITY. Watercolor and graphite on paper, 1929. Titled "Long Island City" and signed and dated, lower right. 14 x 20 inches, 356 x 508 mm. The image depicts St. Mary's Church at 1008 49th Avenue, in the Hunter's Point section of Long Island City, seen from a vacant lot, apparently across the street. Originally founded in 1868, the present church was built in 1893, after its predecessor was destroyed by a fire. The fire also burned the then new PS1, also rebuilt, and now apart of the NY Museum of Modern Art. The architect for the new church was Charles Patrick Keely (1816-1896), whose firm built over 600 Roman Catholic churches in the United States. Provenance, private collection, State College, PA via Freeman's Auctions, Philadelphia. In excellent condition. Framed.
