Grosz, George. CAFE JOSTY. Pencil on sketchbook paper, 1912. Inscribed and dated, and with the George Grosz Estate stamp, verso. Tipped to a paper mount. 4 7/8 x 6 3/4 inches. In excellent condition. In an essay titled "Modernist Writing and Visual Culture" (Cambridge Companion to the Literature of Berlin, Cambridge University Press, Andrew J. Webber, editor), Carolin Duttlinger writes, "One of the hubs of the [Espressionist] movement was the Cafe Josty in Berlin's Potsdamer Platz, which is the subject of Paul Boldts poem "Auf Der Terrasse Des Cafe Josty...Writers and artists were attracted by the Josty's bustling location, and Boldt's sonnet highlights the deafening noise and perpetual trafic of vehicles and traffic."
