Michener, James A. THE MODERN JAPANESE PRINT. Tuttle, Rutland VT and Tokyo, 1962. 1st edition of 510 copies, this being copy 506, numbered, and signed by Michener. Very large folio (22 x 15 1/2 inches), gold-stamped cloth in three colors, wooden slipcase, 55 pages of text, and ten original prints by ten artists, each singed, and/or dated and numbered "506" in pencil. The participating artists are: Hiratsuka In'ichi, Maekawa Sempan, Mori Yoshitoshi, Watanabe Sadao, Kinoshita Tomio, Shima Tamami, Azechi Umetaro, Iwami Reika, Yoshida Masaji, and Maki Haku. The exposed spine slightly faded, a few very light scratches to the slipcase, else in Fine condition throughout. Michener was among the first Americans to bring modern Japanese printmaking to attention; this book was also published in a smaller trade edition, which remains a standard reference. A masterful production, and hard to find complete and in this condition, as many copies have been broken in order to sell the prints individually.
