49 ETCHINGS

Lay, Charles Downing. (American, 1877-1956) 49 Etchings Lay studied architecture at Columbia University from 1896-1900 and obtained his degree in landscape architecture at Harvard in 1902. He was a prominent designer of parks in New York City, where his projects included Marine Park, Bryant Park, Battery Park, John Jay Park, and Madison Square Park. He served as a consulting architect for the 1939 World's Fair. Lay lived in Connecticut and was a founder of the Housatonic Valley Association, which is now responsible for the protection of 2000 square miles of land in the Valley. The etchings are as follows. Dimensions are to the platemark. Most on sheets with tackholes for drying. Some with dates from 1918 to 1930. Printed on various papers including Van Gelder Zonen and sheets from old ledgers.
