ALFRED STIEGLITZ - ORIGINAL PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPH

Engelhard, Georgia. ALFRED STIEGLITZ - ORIGINAL PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPH. Gelatin Silver print, c. 1945. Mounted on board, titled and signed on the mount. 18 x 14 inches, 457 x 356 mm. On the reverse of the mount are exhibition labels from The Camera Club New York (1950, and illustrated in the Club's magazine "Camera Notes" January, 1951, a copy of which is provided with the photograph), the Boston Y.M.C. Union (not dated), and the rubber stamp of an organization in Rotterdam. In excellent condition. Georgia Engelhard, 1902-1986, was Alfred Stieglitz's niece. One of his best known images is a photograph he made of her in 1921. Engelhard was a painter, photographer, writer and mountaineer (she and her husband Eaton Cromwell climbed in the Canadian Rockies, the Alps and elsewhere, and were so proficient that there are mountains named for each of them in the Canadian Rockies). She was friendly with Georgia O'Keefe during the period that O'Keefe was married to Stieglitz, and paintings by Engelhard show an affinity to the work of O'Keefe.
