For this print, to create the effect of night, the plate was printed as a "roll-up,"in which black ink is rolled onto the plate surface, but not forced into the etched lines under pressure as with an etching. By printing the plate as a relief print, the etched lines remain uninked and thus "print" as white lines, while the inked plate prints as black.The image depicts the same scene showing an airplane wing and the ground below, but the scene changes dramatically with the different colors used for each state.
