VOYAGING SOUTHWARD FROM THE STRAIT OF MAGELLAN

(Kent, Rockwell)illus. VOYAGING SOUTHWARD FROM THE STRAIT OF MAGELLAN by Rockwell Kent. Putnam's, NY, 1924 ("Author's Autograph Edition" of 110 copies (this copy numbered 19). 4to., 1/4 vellum over paper-covered boards, 184pp., signed chiaroscuro wood-engraving in two colors, frontispiece and 70 illustrations. Laid-in is the preparatory drawing for the musical notation and lyrics of "Mein hut der hat drei ecken" which appears on page 128, with the pencilled notation in Kent's hand, "Chapter 17 - as noted in text." The drawing measures 2 /34 x 8 3/4 inches, and is affixed to a card measuring 4 3/8 x 10 1/4 inches; there is an instruction for the printer to reduce the drawing to 5 3/4 inches across, which is the size at which it appears in the book. Additionally the book is inscribed by Kent on the blank page between the front free endpaper and the half-title to his then apprentice Stephen Etnier, "To my friend Stephen Etnier/ Rockwell Kent 1929," so that there are three Kent signatures in the book. The wood-engraving is Burne-Jones 3, titled variously "self-Portrait" and "The Wayfarer," of which 185 copies were printed, 75 for the artist, and 110 for inclusion in this edition. Both the book and the separate plate are rare. An exceptionally Fine copy. Housed in Etniers custom chemise and slipcase.
