An imaginatively composed and superbly executed woodcut by the Ukranian-born American master Jacques Hnizdovsky (1915-1985). This image, dating from 1968, is a work by the artist at the height of his powers in the midpoint of his American career. It is a fine example of Hnizdovsky's ability to refine a design down to its essential elements, presenting a realistic subject in an almost abstractly stylized form. Hnizdovsky's work is now avidly collected for its intrinsic artistic merit and because of his stature as a leading figure in the Ukranian-American cultural community.
