Celia Birtwell, born 1941, is a British textile and fashion designer, and longtime friend of David Hockney. During the mid-late 1970s, Hockney made lithographic portraits of many of his friends at the Gemini GEL workshop in Los Angeles. The insightfulness of his vision, the brilliance of his draftsmanship, the quality of Gemini's execution of the prints, and the record it presents of the personal associations in the life of a major artist has made and kept this group of portraits a significant element of Hockney's work of more than forty years.
