Sloan, John. CONTRE DANCE. Etching, 1925. Edition of 100, of which 80 were printed, 35 for use as John and Dolly Sloan's New Year's card for 1926, and 45 by Ernest Roth. Signed in pencil, in the margin, right, and inscribed in the margin at left, "Best wishes from/Dolly and John Sloan/1926." Also inscribed in the plate, ENTERS/1926, a pun on her name and the start of the New Year. 3 3/4 x 2 3/8 inches, 95 x 60 mm. (plate), 6 1/2 x 3 1/4 inches (sheet). Stamped versso with the "Duplicate" de-accession stamp of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In excellent condtion. Sloan was a close friend of the dancer Angna Enters, and he attended a performance of this work. Sloan wrote of this print: "The first of a number of plates which were inspried by the charming and original dance episodes of Angna Enters. This is the only one for which she posed."
