DUOMO

Ross, John T. (American, born 1921). DUOMO. Relief print (paper cut) in colors, 1959. The First Edition of 16 (there was a second edition of unknown size). Signed, dated, titled and numbered 13/16 in pencil. 29 3/8 x 22 1/2 inches (image), framed to 40 /2 x 31 inches. In very good condition. The subject is the Duomo in Florence, Italy. Accompanying the work (affixed to the frame backing), is a statement, likely by the artist, explaining the way the print was made: "Called a relief print or paper cut, this print was produced by a very unique process. The printing block was made in Italy where supplies were scarce and artists had to use ingenuity. It was made of cardboard which was laminated with lacquer. Then the whole surface was again laminated to give it more resistance. Both sides of the block were used. The black and white impressions were printed on one side of handmade Japanese rice paper, the color on the other side. The color shines through the translucent paper.
