Theodule Augustin Ribot (French, 1823-1891) a well-listed and highly regarded 19th Century artist who was a member of the circle of realist painters, including Legros, Fantin-Latour and Whistler, who formed "Les Refuses" in 1859, based on their mutual admiration of Courbet. Among his important works is a painting titled "L'Interieur de Cusine," which was exhibited at the Salon of 1861, and to which these etchings have a strong affinity.
