A label on the back of the frame includes the title and date handwritten in ink above the printed "By Arthur G. Dove / Care of Alfred Stieglitz / 509 Madison Avenue / New York Ciry" along with pencilled inventory numbers and an old price of $2000, and numnerous date stamps between 1968 and 1989. 509 Madison Avenue was the address of Stieglitz's gallery, An American Place was Stieglitz's last gallery, in operation from 1929 until 1946, the year of Stieglitz's death.
One the many small watercolors Dove did throughout his career, this was likely done in the last year that Dove and Helen Torr lived on a houseboat before moving to Geneva, NY to settle his father's estate. Commercial marine subjects including working boats like this were a frequent subject. Oil Boat, Gale, and both versions of The Bessie of New York are examples of similar subjects.
