Cadmus, Paul. American 1904-1999. J D W 1924 (PORTRAIT OF A BEARDED MAN) by Paul Cadmus. Drypoint, 1924. 4 3/4 x 4 5/16 inches; 121 x 111 mm.; sheet 7 1/2 x 6 13/16 inches. Titled, dated and signed in the plate, and signed in pencil, lower right. An early portrait etching, not recorded in Davenport's Catalogue Raisonne, but dating from the same year, 1924, as Davenport 1-5, and like those, executed in drypoint in 1924, at which time Cadmus was studying printmaking with William Auerbach-Levy at the National Academy of Design. There is no indication of an edition, and it is likely that as with Davenport 1 through 32, there were only a few proofs. Very rare.
