Before studying art at the University of Michigan, he worked in a General Mortors facotry, and served in the United States Army. In addition to a career as a painter, printmaker and sculptor, Scanga was a Professor of Visual Art at the University of California, San Diego, His work is many institutional collections including The Art Institute of Chicago, The Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Albright-Knox Gallery, The Guggenheim Museum,The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY MOMA.Juris Ubans was a Professor of Art at Southern Maine University, and a friend of the artist.
