KNEELING ACROBAT

(Bliss, Robert (American 1925-1981)). KNEELING ACROBAT. Oil on masonite, 1961. Titled, signed and dated on verso. 35 1/2 x 22 inches, 902 x 558 mm. In excellent condition. Robert Bliss was from Newton, MA. Although he attended Bowdoin College before serving in the Army in WWII, and studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School after completing military service, he did not complete studies at either institution, and was, as a painter, essentially self-taught. He was noted by Andrew Wyeth who named him as one of the most promising artist of the year in an article in Time Magazine. In his early years he found success in gallery shows and His work was purchased byt major American art institutions. He taught art at Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts from 1951 until 1963. Bliss died of an aneurism in 1981.
