Castleman says about the Carborundum process: "The intense impasto effect in these works, particularly in the black areas, is due to a new technique developed by Henri Goetz. These areas were built up on the plate through the use of a synthetic resin incorporating carborundum, which Miro "painted" directly onto the plate. The heavy strokes of resin hardened into thick relief capable of taking ink in considerable density and deeply impressing the paper. These thickly textured areas contrast with thin transparent washes that seem to underlie them and have the quality of the finest aquatint."
