Orozco, Jose Clemente (Mexican, 1883 – 1949) MAGUEYAS Y NOPALES or INDITOS. Hopkins 17 Lithograph, 1929. Signed lower right and numbered 60/100 lower left. 12 1/8 x 17 1/16 inches 308 x 434 mm (image) 15 3/4 x 22 inches (sheet). In very good condition. Magueyas are Agave and Nopales are prickly pear cactus, but the scene shows workers bent under heavy loads amid the plants. Inditos are Indians, that is, indigenous people. By featuring the plants, and placing the people in the background, where your eye sees them only at second look, Orozco seems to be saying that they are valued less than the agave they are harvesting.
