African Sculpture. MAKONDE SHETANI FIGURE. Tanzania, c. 1950s-60s. Pau-Rosa wood 11 3/4 inches high, on an integral rectangular wood base 8 x 6 1/4 inches. A one-eyed seated male figure with exaggeratedly elongated and enlarged limbs, hands and feet. The quality of the conception and of the carving is typical of the best early pieces of Makonde sculpture.
