(Goodwin, Caroline Love)illus. NIGHTMARE LAND by G. Orr Clark. R. H. Russell, NY., 1901. 4to. cloth backed pictorial boards, 100+/- pp., poems and illustrations in color. Cloth spine replaced, gatherings re-sewn and re-cased. Scuffing loss across "MARE" in title; rear endpaper lacking (though it doesn't seem to exist in the few other copies we have seen). Some light spotting to front endpapers, else the internals very clean and bright. Rare. Caroline Love Goodwin O'Day, 1875 (or 1869)-1943, was born in Georgia, studied art in New York, and had a career as an artist and illustrator before marrying in 1900. After her husband died in 1916 she became an activist for women's suffrage and other social justice causes. She was an early and ardent supporter of Franklin Roosevelt, and with the backing of Eleanor and FDR, she was elected to Congress from New York state, where she served until forced to retire shortly before her death.
