The very rare First state, before the edition of 25 in the second, published state (before the burnishing which created two additional white areas at the left side of the cloud, and before the re-working of the small cloud cluster at the right). 8 3/8 x 12 7/8 inches; 214 x 328 mm. Signed "Kerr Eby, imp." in pencil. A superb impression, in very good condition. The first version of this WW I subject (G. 182, an etching, aquatint and sandpaper ground, of the same subject, was done in 1934 in an edition of 100, titled "September 13, 1918, St. Mihiel" or "The Great Black Cloud) and Eby's only mezzotint. Rare.
