(Ingres, J. A. D.). ODALISQUE, After INGRES by Jean Pierre Sudre. Lithograph, 1826. 11 1/8" x 18 1/2". Lithographic interpretation by Sudre of Ingres painting Recumbent Odalisque, or Great Odalisque. (Wildenstein, INGRES, Phaidon, 1954, Cat. #93). A fine impression of this rich print, sensuous in both subject and technique. Trimmed near the borders, else in excellent condition. Sudre, 1783-1866, was chosen by Ingres to reproduce many of his works in lithography. Though also a painter, Sudre was an early practitioner of lithography, the invention of which, at the beginning of the Nineteenth Century, created a reproductive technique which had much greater versatility than engraving, both in terms of freedom of line and in ability to print large quantities. Sudre's reproduction is about 1/4 the size of the painting, which measures 24 3/8" x 35 3/4", and is in reverse, indicating that the drawing may have been made directly on the stone, rather than on transfer paper. Ingres also did a lithograph of the painting, in a smaller format (about 5"x8").
