Dove, Arthur (American, 1880-1946). OIL BOAT. Watercolor and crayon on paper, 1932. Signed "Dove," lower right. Provenance, Alfred Stieglitz, American Place Gallery; Terry Dintenfass Gallery, Private Collection. 5 x 7 inches. 127 x 178 mm. In very good condition. Framed. The Terry Dintenfass Gallery in New York represented Arthur Dove's estate, so it seems probable that the work was exhibited but not sold at Stieglitz's gallery, was returned to Dove, or to his estate, from whence it went to the Dintenfass gallery and was sold to a private collector. The legendary An American Place was the last of a series of Galleries operated by Stieglitz. Located on the tenth floor of 509 Madison Avenue, it opened in 1929, and closed after Stieglitz's death in 1946.
