ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF CLARE LEIGHTON

Ulmann, Doris (American, 1882-1934). PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPH OF CLARE LEIGHTON. Gelatin silver print, 1931. Signed on the verso by Ulmann, and with her address of 1000 Park Avenue, NY, and date stamped "Jan 1931." The print may be unique, as it is not held in the collections at the University of Oregon, the Library of Congress or the Getty Museum. We understand that it not mentioned by Philip Jacobs in his biography, and that he has said he doesn't recallever seeing it. It is known that Ulmann would sometimes photograph prominent individulas in her apartment and present them with a print, and that these photos were not intended for publication, so it is possible, even likely that this is such a photograph. The photo is further inscribed on the verso, not by Ulmann or Leighton, with information about Leighton receiveing a prize from the Art Institute of Chicago. 8 1/16 x 6 1/8 inches (sheet). In excellent condition.
Doris Ulmann was an American photographer best known for her portraits and for her photographs of Appalachia and its people. Her most important work is "Roll, Jordan, Roll," which chronicles the lives of former slaves and their descendants on a plantation in South Carolina.
Clare Leighton (Amrican, born England, 1898-1989) was a printmaker whose work was primarily done in wood-engraving, a technique of which she is regarded as one of the great practitioners.
