Simonson, Lee (American 1888-1967). PORGY. Lithograph in colors, 1929. A Window Card for the Theater Guild's production of Porgy, the play by DuBose and Dorothy Heyward, adapted from his novel. The novel and the play were the inspiration for George Gershwin's opera Porgy and Bess. Printed by Carey and Sons, NY on heacy card stock. There are variant versions with different theaters and dates in the lettering at the bottom. 22 x 13 1/2 inches. In very good condition. The piece is uncommon, perhaps rare. We have seen a few copies in person, and a few images online...all show some light surface surface spotting, as does this, implying that it is a result of the materials used in production. The image shows residents of Catfish Row looking down into the Courtyard from their windows.
