Karnes, Karen (American, 1925-2016). BOWL. Wood-fired, salt-glazed stoneware. Not signed, as is often the case with her work. 10 inches diameter, 5 inches high, with brown/tan/green mottled glazing. In excellent condition.
Karen Karnes was born in NYC. She graduated from Brooklyn College, began a graduate program at Alfred University, but left to work at Black Mountain College in North Carolina. She studied with Josef Albers there and met Bernard Leachm SHoji Hamada and other modernist potters. She and her husband, David Weinrib joined John Cgae and Merce Cunningham at the Gate Hill Cooperative in Stony Point NY, where they lived until 1979. They moved from there to a farm in Vermont.
