Floethe, Richard (American(1901-1988). DRUG STORE. Woodcut, 1928. Ttiled, lower left, and signed and dated lower right, all in pencil, and initialed "F" in the block. 6 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches (image), 8 3/4 x 7 1/2 inches (sheet). In excellent condition. The scene depicts diners in flapper era clothes in a Chinese restaurant. Done in a strong graphic style which suggests German Expressionism.
Floethe was born in Germany. He emigrated to the U.S. in the late 1920s, and worked in advertising and other aspects of graphic art. He is mostly known as a book illustrator, his illustrations for the Limited Editions Club's edition of Pinocchio probably being his best known work. He also directed art programs for the WPA during the Depression.
