Although undated, this is an early piece by Voulkos, likely from the 1950s, showing his mastery of traditional forms and glazes, from which he moved on to the non-utilitarian sculptural forms for which he is best known. In excellent condition.
In 1953 Voulkos taught at Black Mountain College,where is met Rauchenberg, Albers, Cage, and others who were already producing abstract works in their various media. When he went to New York after the summer ended he met other artist working in what came to be known as Abstract Expressionism. These encounters encouraged him to produce gestural works which showed that the aesthetic of abstract expressionism could be successfully transferred to ceramics
