Whistler, James A. M. THE LITTLE WHEELWRIGHT'S. G.261, K. 245. Etching, 1886. With the printed butterfly, upper left. Printed on old laid paper. 2 3/4 x 3 7/8 inches (plate), 4 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches (sheet). In very good condition. Glascow records only 13 impressions known; only a few have appeared at auction, so that the print is scarce. The Glascow catalogue identifies the scene as likely the port of Dordrecht in the netherlands. This is one of a significant number of subjects depicting blacksmiths, wheelwrights, and forges among Whistler's oeuvre, including paintings, etchings, and lithographs.
