THE MUSIC ROOM

Whistler, James A. M. THE MUSIC ROOM. G.39, K.. 33. Etching and drypoint, 1858. The Second State of Four. Printed on laid paper with a fleur-de-Lis watermark. Unsigned, as issued. Glascow locates 54 impressions. 5 3/4 x 8 5/8 inches (plate), 8 3/4 x 11 1/4 inches (sheet). In excellent condition.
The location is the home of Francis Seymour Haden, Whistler's brother-in-law, a physician and an important etcher in his own right. Haden is shown at left, lounging in a chair reading a newspaper. His wife, Deborah Delano Haden, who was Whistler's half-sister, is at right, reading a book. Between them is a table with a lamp, and sitting at the table, also reading is James Reeves Traer, an obstetrician, who was a partner in Haden's medical practice. The print is noted for the selective wiping which, in this example leaves the table completely white, the area around Haden well-lit, and the area around Deborah Haden quite dark.
