Shulman, Morris (American, 1912-1978). UNTITLED. Casein on paper, circa 1951. Signed, lower left, and inscribed in the narrow margin at the right edge "Aug 6 2-6 Aug 7 2-6 Aug 8 9:30-12," presumably a recording of the dates and times the painting was worked on. 13 3/8 x 20 1/4 inches. There is a small unobtrusive puncture in the upper right quadrant, else in very good condition.
Shulman studied at the National Academy of Design in New York from 1931 to 1934. He had his first exhibition at the 1939 World's Fair. After WWII he studied at the Art Student's League and with Hans Hoffmann at Hoffmann's school. He later taught at the Brooklyn Museum School, The School of Visual Arts, Cooper Unon, and the Skowhegan School. From 1948 on he summered on Monhegan Island, and today is best known as a Monhegan painter.
