Hofer, Karl. UNTER DER TURE (Beneath the Door). Lithograph. About 12 1/2 x 8 inches (image) on a sheet 20 1/4 x 10 24 inches. Signed in pencil, lower right. In excellent condition. Karl Hofer (1878-1955) was a German artist who was associated with the Blau Reiter and the Expressionists, but whose work tended to be more classical in style. It was nevertheless considered to be "degenerate art" by the Nazis. Interior scenes, such as the one depicted here, with a figure, often a young woman paused in a doorway - entering into or leaving from and uncertain situation - are a frequent motif in Hofer's work; this lithograph is a classic example.
