His prints are often complex, fantastical, and spritual. He lived an eccentric and impoversihed life in Paris and in the South of France. After unsuccessfully attempting to emigrate to Canada with his wife and six children, he died in Sevres. As with others such as Meryon, despite living in dire circumstances, Bresdin was well known and greatly admired by Baudelaire, Hugo and others of the French avant garde. Odilon Redon, himslef the maker of prints with strange subjects, considered himself to have been Bresdin's pupil.
