Frasconi, Antonio. SANTA BARBARA LANDSCAPE. Oil on Canvas, 1947. 12 x 14 inches. Titled and monogrammed on the canvas, verso, and titled and signed in paint or ink on the stretcher, verso. In very good condition, with the following professional conservation work: cleaning, reinforcement of edges with Beva gauze and Belgian linen, minor inpainting, and application of protective varnish. Antonio Frasconi was born in Uruguay in 1919. He moved to the United States in 1945, where he first studied at the Art Students League in New York. After an exhibition of his woodcuts at the Brooklyn Museum of Art in 1946, he traveled to California, where he had shows of his work in Novemeber and December of 1946 at San Jose State College, the Pasadena Art Institute and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Though best known for his woodcuts, Frasconi also produced paintings during his early years in America. The exhibition mounted by The Print Club of Cleveland in 1952 included several paintings from 1947-1949, as well as a monotype titled "Santa Barbara Landscape II."
