SEATED WOMAN

De Mayo, Louis (American, born 1926). SEATED WOMAN. Pencil on paper. Signed "De Mayo" lower right. 11 1/8 x 13 1/4 inches (sheet). A skillful repair to a break in the paper in the figure's upper left arm; backed to Japanese tissue for support, else in very good condition. De Mayo has lived and worked in Phoenix, Arizona, where he is highly regarded as a painter and printmaker of Native American subjects. He was born in Philadelphia, and moved to Arizona in 1973. As the signature on this drawing is most definitely his, it is likely an early work, done before his move to the Southwest and before his work turned to Southwestern subjects. We were drawn to it because of the sureness of the artist's line and the economy of means used to render the subject.
