Sanchez, Emilio (American, born Cuba, 1921-1999). SELF-PORTRAIT. Watercolor on heavy, textured watercolor paper. Not dated, but probably 1945-1960. Signed in pencil, lower right. PROVENANCE: Estate of Riva Castleman (Curator of Prints at NY MOMA), likely as a gift from the artist. 15 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches (sheet). Some pencil notations and adhesive residue, verso, else in excellent condition.
Sanchez had a successful career in the United States as a painter and printmaker. His Centennial year, 2021, has been recognized by the US Postal Service in an issue of Forever stamps picturing some of his paintings and lithographs. Sanchez is the first Cuban-American artist to be honored in this way.
