Bishop, Isabel (American, 1902-1988). STUDY, MAN PUTTING ON JACKET. T.55A. Etching with aquatint, 1961. Proof printed in 1985 for catalogue purposes. Signed in pencil, and with the impressed chop of the printer, Stephen Sholinsky. In excellent condition. In 1984 Bishop gave up her studio in Union Square and moved its contents to her home in Riverdale. At that time, she found more than forty etching plates that had been stored and forgotten. Some of these were editioned in 1985 and published by the Sylvan Cole Gallery; others were editioned posthumously and published in 1989. Twenty-five of the plates, were not editioned, but proofs were printed for "catalogue purposes" and appear in the third edition of the Teller catalogue, interpolated in the chronological order of their creation, numbered "A" or "B." Those of the re-discovered plates which were not editioned are sketches, studies, variants or are uncompleted. Teller does not say how many of the proofs were printed, but it would appear that the number was small, as these prints seem uncommon in the marketplace.
