Jean Jansem (born Hovannnes Semerdjian in Armenia) in 1920. His family fled to Greece at the time of the Armenian genocide, and came to Paris in 1931. He was a successful artist from an early age with his paintings and prints being collected by institutions and private collectors. He drew inspiration from the works of Goya and Brueghel, and has been characterized a "miserablist," an artist who focuses on the unfortunate and the poor.
