(Sterrett, Virginia Frances)illus. TANGLEWOOD TALES by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Penn Publishing Co., Philadelphia, 1921. A variant, possibly later printing. 4to., cloth, 261pp., 8 color plates, including frontispiece, and 14 in-text illustrations in b/w. This copy varies from the one usually seen in the following respects: 1. There is no pictorial paste-on on this copy, and there clearly seems not to have been one, or the intention to have one, as this copy does not have the embossed gold square which frames the paste-on the other issue (and on the companion volume "Old French Fairy Tales"). 2. The cloth is different. The usually seen issue has cloth with narrow parallel vertical lines; this cloth has both horizontal and vertical lines. 3. Both have a copyright date of 1921, with no publication date stated. 4. The usually seen issue has the Penn Publishing logo in a horizontal oval format at the bottom of the spine; on this copy the format of the oval is vertical. On this copy the logo is less elaborate and more modern in appearance, rather Art Deco versus the other, which is more Art Nouveau. 5. The usually seen issue has a Greek Key pattern surrounding the copyright notice; this copy has a pattern of "curlicues." 6. Unless I have missed something, the books are otherwise identical. I have obtained and laid in a copy of the paste-on to accompany this copy, in the event I am wrong about it not being called for with this issue. Owner's name on front pastedown, else Fine.
