Abbe, William (American, 1916-1983). THE DUTTON TWINS. Linocut, 1961, edition size not stated. Titled, signed, and dated in pencil, and inscribed "For Toby Hale.", . 12 1/2 x 24 1/2 inches (image), 15 5/8 x 27 3/4 inches (sheet). Abbe studied at Yale and at the Art Student's League. During World War II he was an illustrator in the US Army. After the war he taught at St. Paul's School in Concord NH until 1981. During the summers, and after retiring, he lived on Oak Bluffs, on Martha's Vineyard. The Dutton Twin Houses, in Hillsboro NH were built in 1860. As originally built they were mirror images of each other, sharing a barn which was connected to both.
