Currier and Ives. THE LIGHTNING EXPRESS TRAINS and THE AMERICAN EXPRESS TRAIN.Peters 2088 and 2103. Color lithographs, 1863 and 1864. 17 1/8 x 27 1/8 inches (images), 21 1/2 x 29 1/2 inches (sheets). These appear to be from the editions produced in 1939 by Artistic Picture in collaboration with the Old Print Shop.Their process was to photograph the original lithograph and transfer it to a lithographic metal plate and print it in black and white then hire artist's to color the prints. These are thus reporductions rather than reprints, but of a high quality, and presenting well. The original which was used for Lightning Express had a repaired tear in the upper center, the outline of which is visible in this print. In very good condition, with the colors very fresh and strong; there is a stain in the margin of American Express at center right, not touching the image.
