THE WOMEN'S PAGE

Sloan, John. THE WOMEN'S PAGE. Etching, 1905 (M132). 4 1/2" x 6 1/2", signed, titled and inscribed "100 Proofs" in pencil. 100 were printed, of which this is one of 35 early proofs. From the New York Life series. Very good condition, with tack holes for drying. Chosen by Sloan as one of his favorite prints, "perhaps the best all-around example, both in subject matter and treatment." (Sloan quoted by Zigrosser, 1950). "Observation of life in furnished rooms back of my 23rd Street studio inspired many of my paintings and etchings of this period. Done with symapthy but no "social consciousness."
