Knesebeck describes these as "Often annotated by the artist as “unvollendete Arbeit” [uncompleted work] or “unfertige Arbeit” [unfinished work]. Two closed tears in the upper margin, one just touching the platemark, remnants of old hinging tape, else in very good condition. This image of a mother fighting agaist death for the life of her child is one of several etchings by Kollwitz on the theme of a mother struggling to save a child or mourning its death.
