Born in Namur, Belgium Benoît Gilsoul was born in Belgium in 1914. He attended the Academie Royale des Beaux Arts, and while still a student there, he founded an influential artist’s group and collaborated on a design for the Catholic Pavilion at the World’s Fair held in Belgium in 1935. He traveled in Europe with the painter Nicholas de Stael, then a fellow student and friend. He became the President of Association des Artistes Belges, and after his regular term, he remained its honorary President until his death. In 1960 he went to America on a Government grant, and decided to emigrate with his family. In America he worked primarily in stained glass design, but also continued to draw, paint, make prints and design textiles.
