Voulkos, Peter (American 1924-20020 UNTITLED BOTTLE FORM. Stoneware, painted and glazed. Signed on the bottom. 7 inches tall, 5 ½ inches in diameter. Provenance: Private collection California, acquired from Fred Marer. Marer was a mathematics professor and collector;he and his wife donated a major collection of American and Asian pottery to Scripps College. Although undated, this is an early piece by Voulkos, likely from the 1950s, showing his mastery of traditions forms and glazes, from which he moved on to non-utilitarian sculptural forms for which he is best known.
