Davie, Alan (British, 1920-2014). ZURICH IMPROVISATION XIII. Color lithograph, 1965. Edition of 25. Signed, numbered 9/25, dated, and titled "XIII," all in pencil. 21 x 30 1/2 inches (image), 34 7/8 x 25 inches (sheet). In excellent condition, with the colors very fresh. Davie was an abstract expressionist known for the incorporating themes of mysticism and myth into his painting, in which he used a repertoire of abstract shapes and bright colors. In his long life, as art tastes changed he went from being one of Britiain's most famous painters into near obscurity, thouhg he continued to paint and exhibited, and was represented by the major London gallery Gimpel Fils. The Tate mounted a major exhibition in 2014, shortly before his death, and another has been presented by Gimpel, with the result that the art world is again paying attention to his work.
